Current Projects

1.“Glial Cells and Polyamine Signaling in the Central Nervous System”. The grant seeks to understand the interplay between polyamine (PA) and acetylated polyamine (aPA) flux by glial cells in brain function and dysfunction. Recent findings highlight that HIV associated neuronal disorders (HAND) are linked to PAs and aPAs. We found that PAs are accumulated in adult brain preferentially in glial cells, not in neurons, and are very potent multi-charged organic cations. Glial cells are involved in many CNS diseases and syndromes, however, the role of PAs in glia and in brain status is a mystery still. PA pathways are missing key links between glial-to-glial signaling, glial function, and diseases. In this project, we propose that normal and acetylated PAs are novel gliotransmitters that regulate both, glial and neuronal network function and participate in blood-brain-circulation. PAs are key molecules underlying CNS function and acetylated PAs are markers of HAND. We will test the mechanisms of PA uptake/accumulation/release/signaling in neuroglia in brain.

2.”Does Astrocytic Dysfunction Contribute to Stroke-Induced Brain Damage in Diabetics?” – The goal of this research is to determine if reinstatement of Kir4.1 potassium channels in astrocytes can reduce the poor outcomes of stroke in diabetics.
