The research interest of this laboratory is directed towards understanding the basic mechanisms by which chemicals (pesticides, insecticides and nerve agents) adversely affect the central and peripheral nervous systems.  Better assessment of acute and chronic chemical exposure should reveal how glutamatergic excitotoxicity contributes to axonal loss and neuronal degeneration and how it leads to neuronal inflammation and various neurological illnesses.  Development of a drug to prevent and treat neuroinflammatory diseases related to neurodegeneration is an essential task for our research group.  These studies are carried out in vivo and in vitro using rat hippocampal slices.

Recently, we have been developing an in vivo murine Gulf War Veterans´Illness model, a condition related to delayed cholinergic neurotoxicity.  We are investigating the effect of chronicle exposure to nerve agents, DFP, along and in combination with its antidote and prophylactic drug, Pyridostigmine Bromide, the insect repellant DEET, and the insecticide Permethrin in the presence of stress.  Neurologic deficiencies are being evaluated by electrophysiological, neurobehavioral, molecular and histological changes.
