Dr. Sabeva’s laboratory is trying to understand whether synaptic vesicles recycle spontaneously and whether they belong to different vesicle pools. One of the proteins involved in synaptic transmission is Complexin. Its loss of function results in a large increase in spontaneous vesicle fusion and a decrease in action potential evoked vesicle fusion. Therefore Complexin contributes to determine the availability of vesicles for fusion. Dr. Sabeva is addressing the question of whether Complexin defines a separate vesicle pool for spontaneous release in Drosophila neuromuscular synapse.
