Program Director Message
“Internal medicine is a discipline encompassing the study andpractice of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, care, and treatment of men and women from adolescence to old age, during health and all stages of illness.”
(ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Internal Medicine).
Since its establishment in 1978 the Internal Medicine Residency Program of the Universidad Central del Caribe at the University Hospital Ramon Ruiz Arnau (HURRA) has trained caring, compassionate physicians who are competent to provide the highest level of primary medical care.
HURRA, our primary site, is a state-run facility that cares for patients from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Our patient population provides our residents with a rich experience in cultural diversity and sharpens their skills on system-based learning by using the healthcare system to provide high quality, evidenced-based, cost-effective care. Our faculty is an amalgam consisting of veteran clinician educators with 25 to 30 years of experience together with young graduates from our program entirely committed to the formation of Internists that upon graduation could take care of ourselves and our families. Hospital employees and supporting staff are aware of the vital role our residency Program has in providing healthcare to our community and remained loyal to our effort to train Internists that could become their primary physicians.
Our learning environment is characterized by camaraderie, collaboration, and diligence. We offer total synchrony of goals for our residents as well as for our Program. In HURRA our resident’s success is our Program’s triumph.
