RCMI International Symposium on Health Disparities

Entitled “Translating Science to Better Health: The Power of Diversity and multicultural Engagement”, Puerto Rico hosted the 13 International Symposium on Health Disparities of the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Program of the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), that took place October 10 – 13, 2012, at the Puerto Rico Convention Center. The conferences focused on diseases that disproportionately affect minority populations, such as: cardiovascular, cancer, diabetes and infectious diseases.


Iniciativa Comunitaria recognizes community work done by Medicina Urbana

The Iniciatica Comunitaria organization, directed by Dr. Vargas Vidot, paid homage to the student group Medicina Urbana and designated them as “Distinguished Volunteers”.

The Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC) congratulates Yaliz Loperena, Raysa Rosario and Ivette Suárez, students in the Cellular and Molecular Biology doctoral program of the UCC School of Medicine, who were each invited by the American Association for Cancer Research to present their research work at the annual meeting to be held in Washington, D.C.

Campus visits to promote the Virtual Plaza HETS Services available free of charge to member institution’s community.

To reinforce internal relations and increase member’s involvement, the HETS Executive Director has visited various campuses to promote HETS free of charge services. These visits had the purpose to communicate HETS commitment to better serve its member institutions, and explore new collaborative liaisons.


New Parkinson’s disease Study Reported by Researchers at Universidad Central del Caribe

The Paper“L-DOPA Uptake in Astrocytic Endfeet Enwrapping Blood Vessels in Rat Brain” was produced in the Universidad Central del Caribe by Drs.: Inyushin, Huertas, Kucheryavykh, Sanabria, Eaton, Skatchkov and Rojas.
This study has reached larger impact in the scientific community and it has been cited by several international newsletters.


Dedication of the Drug and Alcohol Dependence Journal Edition to Dr. Rafaela Robles

This Special Issue of Drug and Alcohol Dependence Journal is dedicated to Rafaela Robles, Ed.D., a pioneer in substance abuse and HIV research with Latino populations and a founding member of the National Hispanic Science Network. The authors honor a magnificent mentor to many of today’s leading
scientists in the field of drug abuse in Hispanic populations.



SBIRT Training Taken from the BMC Emergency Department to Universidad Central del Caribe in Puerto Rico

The BNI ART Institute recently traveled to Bayamon, Puerto Rico to train members of the faculty and the president of the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC), in Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). This training originated to meet SAMHSA’s priority to incorporate behavioral health in primary care.


UCC Students Participate in Exchange Program in Colombia

Three students of the Medical Images Technology Program at the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC) act as ambassadors of our Institution in Bogotá, Colombia. This visit was made possible by an invitation from the Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina (FUAA), Bogotá Campus, as part of a collaboration agreement between both Institutions.
