The Universidad Central del Caribe Celebrates its 43rd Commencement Ceremony

Dr. José Ginel Rodríguez, President and Dean of Medicine, Dr. Eduardo A. Santiago Delpín, recipient of the distinction of Doctoris Honoris Causa and Mr. Adolfo Krans, Interim President Board of Trustees

The university community, friends and students’ family of the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC) proudly celebrated the 43rd Commencement Ceremony. During the event, a total of 174 students were conferred an academic degree in the health professions, of which 68 students received their Doctor in Medicine degree, and 77 students, from the Bachelor of Science, Associate Degree, and Post-Associate Degree Certificates in the Medical Images Program, received their degrees in their respective specialties.  Also, UCC awarded 4 Masters of Health Science in Substance Abuse Counseling and 4 Masters in Biomedical Sciences.  For second consecutive year, the UCC conferred a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology.  The highest academic recognition was bestowed on the figure of Dr. Eduardo A. Santiago Delpín who was conferred an honorary distinction of Doctoris Honoris Causa in appreciation of his extraordinary contributions to the improvement of the health of Puerto Ricans, especially his outstanding work in the kidney transplants surgery field, immunology, medical research and bioethics. His graduation speech was aimed to motivate and inspire the new health professionals to preserve the values of excellence for the wellbeing and collective health.

During the event, Mr. Adolfo Krans, Interim President of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. José Ginel Rodríguez, President of the University and Dean of Medicine, both representing the university community, awarded the following recognitions:

  •  Edgardo Mercado Rodríguez Award to student Emilarie Quiñones Fonseca, from the Medical Imaging Technology Program, for her achievements in clinical performance and commitment with volunteer community services.
  •  Dr. Luis Izquierdo Mora Distinction, to honor a student for his/her achievements in the Family Medicine rotation and distinguished for the delivery of compassionate services to underserved populations.  Dr. Luis Izquierdo Mora, for whom the award is named, was a great public health professional and leader in the field of medicine and primary health care and was founder of the Department of Family Medicine.  This distinction was awarded to Sameilia Marie Hernaiz Gómez.
  •  The School of Medicine Alumni Association presented a distinction to Rafael A. Romeu Mejia, a school of medicine student, for his leadership, academic excellence and commitment to the Alma Mater.
  •  The Professional Woman Who Inspire, Nurture and Share Their Knowledge (PINK), women helping women, presented an award to Sameilia Marie Hernaiz Gómez, a school of medicine student, for her humanistic approach through medicine and genuine dedication to human needs in Puerto Rico and abroad.

During the commencement ceremony the following students were awarded an academic recognition for achieving the highest Grade Point Index (GPI) during their completion of the corresponding degrees at the UCC:
