Dr. Alves is seeking alternative approaches to prevent or alleviate central nervous system (CNS) lesions using leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) obtained from neural progenitor cells. Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) currently affects over 40 million people worldwide, and while HIV is best known for its devastating effects on the immune system and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), it also causes various neurological disorders, known collectively as HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND).
