The UCC Community Congratulates Dr. Jose W. Rodríguez

JWRodriguezThe UCC community congratulates Dr. Jose W. Rodriguez, Associate Professor, of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, for being selected by the RTRN Small Grants Program, National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), to receive a grant award for his research project entitled: “Immunomodulatory Effects of Curcumin on Lymphocytes from Prostate Cancer Patients”.

Prostate cancer has high incidence and mortality rates, especially in Hispanics and African Americans when compared with White Americans. Little is known about the immunostimulatory effect of curcumin against prostate cancer. If anti-tumor activity of curcumin is demonstrated, it has potential for future clinical immunotherapeutic applications.  Dr. Rodríguez’s research will provide information on the immunomodulatory effect of curcumin in lymphocytes obtained from metastatic prostate cancer patients whose immune system is mostly suppressed by oncologic treatment.
