The Universidad Central del Caribe Celebrates its 42nd Commencement Ceremony

Raysa Rosario Acevedo, First PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology

Students, family, faculty, and employees of the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC) proudly celebrated the University’s 42nd Commencement Ceremony. During the event, a total of 176 students were presented with their academic degrees as health professionals, of which 80 students received their Doctor in Medicine degrees, and 91 students, from the Bachelor’s, Associate Degree, and Post-Associate Certificate in the Medical Imaging Program, received their degrees in their respective specialties.  Also awarded were 4 Master’s in Health Sciences in Substance Abuse Counseling and 1 Master’s in Biomedical Sciences.  Significantly, this year the UCC proudly conferred its first PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology.  The graduation speech was delivered by Dr. Richard Hann, Full Professor and Director of the Department of Biochemistry, who emphasized the role of health care professionals in teaching other students, colleagues and patients.

During the event, Mr. Joaquin Arbona Lago, President of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. Jose Ginel Rodriguez, President of the University and Dean of Medicine, both representing the university community, awarded the following distinctions:

  •  Edgardo Mercado Rodríguez Award to student Zuaneshly Santiago Marrero, from the Medical Imaging Technology Program, for her achievements in clinical performance and commitment with volunteer community services.
  •  Dr. Stanley H. Asensio Beauchamp Award, named in honor of Professoris Emminentis and founding Director of the ObGyn Department, presented to Chloe N. Franceschini, for her excellent academic and clinical achievements at her ObGyn rotation who will continue on to graduate medical education training in this specialty.
  •  Dr. Luis Izquierdo Mora Distinction, to honor a student for his/her achievements in the Family Medicine rotation and distinguished for compassionate services to underserved populations.  This distinction was awarded to Karl A. Slanzinski.  Dr. Luis Izquierdo Mora, for whom the award is named, has been a great public health professional and leader in the field of medicine and primary health care and was founder of the Department of Family Medicine.
  •  The School of Medicine Alumni Association presented a distinction to Ariel Grajales, a school of medicine graduate, for his leadership, academic excellence and commitment to the Alma Mater.
  •  The Professional Woman Who Inspire, Nurture and Share Their Knowledge (PINK), women helping women, presented an award to Glaymar Domínguez, a school of medicine graduate, for her humanistic approach through medicine and genuine dedication to human needs in Puerto Rico and abroad.
